The smoke you inhale is capable of damaging air sacs, airways, and the lining of lungs. This block airflow and results in difficulty in breathing.
Emphysema is a state of the lung that causes shortness of breath. This happens when the air sacs in the lungs get damaged. Eventually, leads to weakening the inner walls of the air sacs making larger air spaces than of many small ones. All the listed effects depend on the number of years a person smoke and on how much he or she smokes. The health risks of smoking tobacco can be gradually reduced as you stop smoking.
